Color genetics in Labs
Color genetics in Labs is interesting (to me anyway). First you have yellow fur or not yellow fur. Not yellow is dominate. So in the case of Ginger she's yellow so genetically she always sends yellow to her pups. Bear is black but carries yellow so about 50% of the time he sends yellow and 50% of the time he sends not yellow. If you look at their past litters they are always close to 50% yellow.
After yellow/not yellow you have chocolate or black with black being dominate. So in the case of Ginger she is yellow but has a chocolate nose which tells you she doesn't carry black. Bear is black but also carries chocolate. So Ginger always sends chocolate and Bear sends black or chocolate. If he sends Black the puppy will be black (or if it's a yellow pup it'll have a black nose) and if he sends chocolate it'll be a chocolate pup (or a yellow pup with a chocolate nose).
Emma is chocolate so we know she doesn't carry black (or she would be black) and in her pedigree she only has one yellow dog and that's 5 generations back so it's unlikely she caries yellow. So in this case Emma will always send the dominate not yellow and recessive chocolate. So even though Bear carries the recessive yellow they will not have yellow pups. So if Bear sends chocolate the puppy will be chocolate and if he sends black the puppy will be black. So we expect the litter to be around 50/50 black and chocolate.
